Your Pet is Due for a Prescription Check
Your Pet is Due for a Prescription Check
If your pet is taking a medication that is categorised as a Schedule 4 drug, it is important for you to understand that each of our vets must comply with prescribing regulations.
To ensure the responsible use of Schedule 4 drugs, vets can develop a forward-planned medication program for a maximum of 6 months. This means your pet will require a regular examination to review their medication.
What is Involved in a Prescription Check
- Physical examination during a prescription check allows the vet to assess if your pets condition has deteriorated, if new issues are developing and ensure the medication you are using are the most appropriate for your pet’s illness.
- New medications are being developed. Prescription checks allow the vet to discuss with you whether these new medications would be more appropriate for your pet’s condition.
- Blood tests are often used to assess whether the medication is having any adverse effects on your pets’ organs or bone marrow. These bloods tests allow early detection of problems, and allow us to implement changes before your pet becomes unwell.
- Therapeutics drug tests may be required to measure the drug concentration in your pet’s blood. This information, as well as the patient’s condition, is used to individualise dosage so that the drug concentration can be maintained within a target range.
Requirements of vets creating a forward-planning medication program, include
- The person presenting the animal is a bona fide client.
- The vet has knowledge of the management, health status and drugs status of the animal, and there is a therapeutic need for the medication.
- The vet must ensure the client understands the appropriate use of the drug.
- If the drug is an antibiotic, the vet has considered the expected infectious agent, and risk of antibacterial resistance.
To meet these requirements certain drugs are not available as a repeat prescription, or certain patients may not qualify for forward-planned medication programs.
Thankyou for your understanding and cooperation regarding prescription checks for your furry or feathered friend. Together our aim is to ensure the health and happiness of your animal.
